The Port of Johnstown has welcomed its first shipment of oversized project cargo – a variety of generating equipment that Logistec Stevedoring Ontario successfully unloaded from the ship onto awaiting trucks.

“The port completed its renovations and expansion earlier this year, including an additional berth and more laydown area. This has helped us provide the services that our customers need for out-of-gauge pieces,” said Jean-Marc Bélanger, Logistec’s Sales Manager for Great Lakes and St. Lawrence ports. “Developing new business for our partners is very important to us. Project cargo is a growing market, and benefits a number of industries throughout Ontario including manufacturing, construction, and renewable energy.”

The Port of Johnstown offers over 40,000 square metres of laydown area for bulk, break-bulk and project cargo, as well as a new 70,000 square-metre dock. The port’s intermodal capabilities include CN rail tracks and close proximity to highways such as the 401 and 416, which connect to key markets throughout the Ottawa Valley and the Greater Toronto Area.

“This shipment is a big deal for us, and is hopefully the first of many project cargo shipments to come through the port. It’s the kind of business we were hoping to attract with the additional dock,” said Robert Dalley, General Manager at the Port of Johnstown. “Logistec does a lot of the work for us as far as finding the cargo. They keep track of projects in the area that require oversized cargo, know what’s being built and where the investments are going.”
