The Logistec terminal in Contrecœur (QC) welcomed nearly 100 employees, customers, partners, and suppliers to celebrate its modernization project and inaugurate the site’s new equipment.
“Our investment of nearly $12 million will allow us to move larger volumes and work with a more diversified cargo base in Contrecœur. In addition to the bulk cargo that the terminal is known for, we have enhanced our ability to handle break-bulk, project cargo, and heavy lift,” said Madeleine Paquin, President and CEO of Logistec. “With the upgrades that we’ve put in place, Logistec’s Contrecœur terminal is now one of the most modern, efficient bulk-handling facilities along the St. Lawrence River. We foresee a bright future for this vital part of our network.”
Renovations to the site include installation of a new rail-mounted hopper and a Liebherr LPS 420 crane with a capacity of 120 metric tonnes in lift mode and 75 metric tonnes in grab mode – the largest SWL capacity in North America for a rail-mounted crane. Logistec put in brand new tracks as well as an electrical supply and distribution system to suit the crane and hopper’s modern designs, and make the terminal more energy efficient.
Logistec also replaced an important section of the conveyor system, covered and reduced the number of conveyors and transfer points, and installed supplementary dust collectors. This helps make the loading and unloading process better for the environment, and further minimizes fugitive dust and loss of material.
“Over the past three years, our operations team has been working tirelessly to renovate and modernize this already bustling terminal. I’ve often said that our people are key to our success at Logistec, and this case is no exception. They completed this comprehensive project safely and on time,” Ms. Paquin added.
Several commodity suppliers have already chosen Contrecœur as a multi-user distribution centre. Its strategic location provides ample, direct access to railways, highways, and barge services.
“A little over 20 years ago, Logistec became the first cargo handling firm to operate the terminal upon its acquisition by the Montréal Port Authority. We have successfully combined forces, and I am delighted by the steady growth that we’ve seen here in Contrecœur over the past several years. It’s a privilege to work with such loyal and entrepreneurial partners,” said Sylvie Vachon, President and CEO of the Montréal Port Authority.
As a founding member of Green Marine, Logistec is also committed to sustainable development and continuous improvement of our environmental performance with concrete and measurable actions, such as those taken at Contrecœur. Marine transportation is a vital part of the logistics chain, and short-sea shipping projects are among the innovative multimodal solutions that the maritime industry is pursuing.
“The City of Contrecœur enthusiastically welcomes Logistec’s major investment in its terminal here,” said Suzanne Dansereau, Mayor of Contrecœur. “We are proud to highlight this venture and the confidence that Logistec is showing in the potential of Contrecœur’s shipping activities. The company understands the importance of aligning its business with the needs of current and future clients, and Contrecœur offers a state-of-the-art facility to provide vessels from throughout the world with quality cargo-handling services.”
